Nintendo Switch 2: Everything you need to know (and a little more)

Nintendo's at it again – the Switch 2 is official! And we have all the info for you before your neighbor in the Mediamarkt waiting area tells you. Whether it's price, specs, new Joy-Cons, or whether Hollow Knight: Silksong is actually coming out this time (spoiler: yes!) – you'll get the full package here.

Release & Price – When will the Switch 2 be released?

(Switch 2 Bundle - Mario Kart World)

The Nintendo Switch 2 will be released on June 5, 2025 – just in time for the summer holidays.
The price is €449.99 for the standard model without any frills.
For the price-conscious buyer (assuming there even is such a thing in this case), there's a limited-edition bundle with Mario Kart World for €499.99 – but only until fall. So hurry before it's sold out.

Pre-order – easier than a PS5 launch

(Switch 2 - Pre-order at Amazon and Saturn)

You can already pre-order in Germany at MediaMarkt or Saturn (bundle for €509.99) without fax, blood sacrifice, or lottery. In the official Nintendo Online Shop, however, you need an active Switch Online membership until March 31, 2025 – sounds complicated, and it is a bit (not to mention the additional cost for the online membership).

Technical data – finally more power under the hood

The Switch 2 has a lot under the hood (not as much as a gaming PC, but hey – it fits in your backpack):

Display : 7.9" LCD, 1080p, HDR10, VRR up to 120 Hz

Processor : Custom Nvidia T239 (Tegra Next)

RAM : 12 GB

Storage : 256 GB internal

Battery : 5220 mAh, 2–6.5 hours runtime

Connectivity : Wi-Fi 6, NFC

Ports : USB 2.0, HDMI, LAN

Weight : 534 g with Joy-Cons attached

Joy-Con 2 – more than just an upgrade

Nintendo has tweaked the Joy-Cons – and has done so significantly:

Magnetic attachment instead of rail system - less wobbling and a higher quality feel.

New C-Button for GameChat (free until March 31, 2026, then subscription-only WTF?!)

Mouse mode for point-and-click fans – which I think is pretty cool. However, it remains to be seen how many games will actually use this feature.

Finally, the whole thing feels less like "plastic" and more like high-quality gaming.

Games? Of course!

Mario Kart World

is launching (bundle at Saturn and MediaMarkt for 509.99 EUR)

The Duskbloods

from FromSoftware – dark, exclusive, FromSoft after all. I think it'll be awesome.

And finally: Hollow Knight: Silksong – 2025 really is the year of wonders.

Donkey Kong Bananza - I'm really excited about this.

Yakuza 0: Director's Cut

And then a few other titles that have been announced at least for 2025:

Super Mario Party Jamboree - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV (July 24)

Kirby and the Forgotten Land - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World (August 28)

Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition (2025)

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (2025)

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment (Winter 2025)

and more bangers!

Backward compatibility? Yes, but...

Old Switch games work – theoretically . Nintendo is currently reviewing over 10,000 titles – sounds like the toughest intern job in the world. However, it's already known that not all physical games will make it to the Switch 2. So, it remains to be seen what Nintendo has promised. But overall, I'm surprised that Nintendo is even accommodating players in this regard.

Memory expansion – small slot, big discussion

Running out of space on your console? Nintendo is opting for microSD Express cards this time – faster, cooler, but (still) hard to come by. Already sold out in Japan. So: first come, first served. 256 GB of storage costs a mere €59.99 at baur.de.

Criticism? There is some.

Some say: “Just a hardware upgrade, not innovation!”
Others say: “PS4 graphics are no longer sexy in 2025!”
And others: “It doesn’t matter, the main thing is Mario.”

The fact is: The Switch 2 is a technological leap, but not a somersault. Nevertheless, it will sell like hotcakes – because Nintendo fans know: graphics are nice, but gameplay is even better.

Conclusion – buy or wait?

If you already own a Switch and are waiting for the “Next Level,” then go for it!
The new technology, new games and smarter Joy-Cons make the Switch 2 a real upgrade.
But if you're currently sorting through your account and haven't finished Tears of the Kingdom yet, don't worry. The old Switch will be supported for a long time.

In this sense - stay Nerdy

Your Thomas
